Drawing Keeler's Korner

Years ago, Keeler's Korner looked like this. It is located on Highway 99 in Lynnwood Washington. At the time it was the only gas station within miles.
As you can see in this picture, the road was rough and unpaved. there were a lot of trees growing in the surroundings.
As many businesses you would see in those days, the owner of the business would live upstairs and conduct business down below.
These proud owners were not afraid to stand on the street with their dog, something you would not dare do in that same place today.

This picture was taken by my mother somewhere in the late 80's early 90's. She said she was going to paint it. After she passed I took up her resolve to one day paint it, but I was unhappy with the angle of this picture. I loved the lush tree's that had grown up in the background, but I really wanted to paint it from a better prospective.

One day while walking Danny Boy, I exited an opening in the fence at the far side of Keeler's Korner apartments, and came upon the perfect angle to take a picture. 
Danny Boy was very patient while I snapped a bunch of photo's at slightly different angles. 

The day was very gloomy, so there was not much in the way of drama as far as shadows cast.
Today as you can see, many of the tree's have been chopped down to make way for housing.
So with a good reference photo in hand, I set out to make a drawing. I decided to draw it instead of paint it, in order to make it have an old time, black and white photo type of feel.

I used my artistic license to add some tree's back in where there are now none. I added some shadows for drama. I think my mom would be proud that I finally captured this historic building in an artistic way.
